Calculator · Owning a car

When is your NCT due,
and what it costs.

The schedule steps with the car's age: nothing until four, then every two years, then annually once it passes ten. Enter the year it was first registered.

The 40-year exemption is for non-commercial use. Vintage cars used commercially, for example wedding hire, still need a valid test. The car must always be roadworthy regardless of when it was last tested.

Fees and schedule as set by the RSA, effective for 2026. A re-test is free where only a visual re-inspection is needed. Sources: RSA NCT, Citizens Information. Last verified 2026-07-04.

Selling before the next test?
