Audi A6 vs BMW 5 Series: Irish Diesel Asking Prices Compared
An A6 and a 5 Series can sit on the same shortlist, but a premium-car badge does not remove the need to compare exact engines, body styles and history. The asking-price gap only becomes useful once those details are understood.
In the 2020 selected groups, the median asking prices are €31,720 for Audi A6 (6 adverts) and €31,998 for BMW 5 Series (16 adverts). BMW 5 Series is €278 higher in these samples. At least one side has fewer than ten comparisons, so individual advertisements can materially affect the difference.

Medians of the selected pricing cohorts, not final selling prices. Matching reference mileage does not guarantee identical actual mileage bands or specifications. Samples below ten are marked small; incomplete searches or fewer than three matches are not priced.
What this comparison does and does not control
Both sides of this study start with diesel adverts and the same reference mileage for matching years. The production engine may select different actual mileage bands or engine mixes. That prevents the difference between medians from becoming a clean measure of brand value.
The evidence behind the medians

Start with your actual requirements
Separate saloons and estates if body style matters to you, and identify the engine output and gearbox. Check whether one sample is mostly dealer stock while the other includes more private adverts. A change in the package offered can explain part of an apparent price advantage.
For buyers: compare the complete purchase
Budget for inspection findings and any due work before ranking the cars by asking price. Compare records and equipment on the actual examples rather than assuming one model's reputation answers the condition question. The better purchase can be the better documented car, whichever badge it wears.
For sellers: understand the alternative shortlist
Use the rival model to understand a buyer's alternatives, not to replace a same-model valuation. A buyer considering both cars may accept different specification trade-offs from the ones you made when buying yours.
Turn the gap into a useful decision
Keep the asking-price difference separate from the cost of any known work and from your running-cost assumptions. If you estimate annual savings, label the consumption, distance and price assumptions so that changing one does not silently change the conclusion.
These are cross-sectional asking-price samples gathered on one date. They are not completed sales, a reliability ranking or a forecast of what either car will be worth next year. Use a current, exact-car comparison and an inspection before committing money.
