Volkswagen Polo vs Renault Clio: Comparing an Irish Small-Car Budget

A small-car budget can buy a newer basic car or an older car with a preferred gearbox and specification. Comparing Polo and Clio asking prices helps frame that choice, provided the exact versions remain visible.

In the 2020 selected groups, the median asking prices are €16,950 for Volkswagen Polo (19 adverts) and €14,880 for Renault Clio (5 adverts). Volkswagen Polo is €2,070 higher in these samples. At least one side has fewer than ten comparisons, so individual advertisements can materially affect the difference.

What this comparison does and does not control

This study uses petrol cohorts at common year and reference-mileage points. It does not hold power output, gearbox, equipment or condition constant. A difference between the medians is therefore a market-shortlist observation rather than a measured brand premium.

The evidence behind the medians

2020 Volkswagen Polo: 19 pricing adverts, 75k-105k km (±15k); 15 dealer and 4 private. Advertised engines: 1.0 L (18), 1.2 L (1).

2020 Renault Clio: 5 pricing adverts, 60k-120k km (±30k); 3 dealer and 2 private. Advertised engines: 1.0 L (5).

2022 Volkswagen Polo: 11 pricing adverts, 45k-75k km (±15k); 9 dealer and 2 private. Advertised engines: 1.0 L (11).

2022 Renault Clio: 10 pricing adverts, 45k-75k km (±15k); 8 dealer and 2 private. Advertised engines: 1.0 L (10).

Start with your actual requirements

Check insurance quotes for the actual registrations before deciding that one advert is cheaper overall. If an automatic is essential, build a separate automatic comparison. A mixed sample can hide a requirement that materially narrows your options.

For buyers: compare the complete purchase

View cars that meet the same basic brief and inspect service evidence, tyres, keys and ordinary wear. Keep an allowance for known work based on real quotes. Do not equate a low odometer number with a fully documented history.

For sellers: understand the alternative shortlist

Explain your engine and gearbox clearly. A well-specified Polo or Clio may compete with different cars from a basic version. The buyer needs to understand that distinction before the asking price makes sense.

Turn the gap into a useful decision

Keep the asking-price difference separate from the cost of any known work and from your running-cost assumptions. If you estimate annual savings, label the consumption, distance and price assumptions so that changing one does not silently change the conclusion.

These are cross-sectional asking-price samples gathered on one date. They are not completed sales, a reliability ranking or a forecast of what either car will be worth next year. Use a current, exact-car comparison and an inspection before committing money.
